Neither is automatically wrong, but knowing which mode you’re working with tells you how much communication overhead you’ll be managing.

How They Prepare Files for Another Developer

Ask: “If a developer unfamiliar with your process opens these files, what do they find?”

The answer tells you about handoff quality – naming conventions, folder structure, code comments, anything that makes the build legible to someone who didn’t build it. A provider who treats handoff quality as part of the deliverable will describe it easily. One who treats delivery as “here are the files” probably hasn’t thought much about it.

Running a Low-Risk Trial Project

Before committing a full client project to a new frontend partner, run a trial. Pick a real page – not a demo, not something simple – but a page that’s representative of your actual work: a section with responsive complexity, a component with multiple states, something that requires judgment.

Give them the Figma file with whatever context you’d normally provide. Don’t add extra documentation to compensate for gaps in the file. The point is to see how they handle normal project conditions, not ideal ones.

Before delivery, notice how they communicate. Do they ask questions? Are the questions specific? Do they batch them, or do they come one at a time over several days? How they handle ambiguity before delivering is the most predictive thing you’ll observe.

When the build comes back, test it yourself: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and at least one mobile device. Compare it against the Figma file section by section. Look at the code – not to audit every line, but to see if it’s organized, if names are logical, if another developer could work with it.

Then request one revision. Make it specific and reasonable. The revision process – how they respond, how quickly, whether they acknowledge the request or push back – tells you more than the original delivery did.

One trial project won’t tell you everything. It will tell you enough.

Questions That Reveal How the Provider Actually Works

These are not the questions most agencies ask. They’re more useful than the standard checklist.

What do you do when a Figma file has inconsistent spacing or missing component states? This separates providers with a real process from those who improvise.

How do you document assumptions made during a build? Ask for an example. If they can’t show you one, they probably don’t track them.

What happens when client feedback comes back and changes something outside the original scope? How scope changes are handled – whether there’s a clear policy or whether it’s negotiated case by case – affects revision cost significantly.

Which browsers and devices do you test, and how? Real devices vs. simulators. Manual vs. automated. The answer should be specific.

Can another developer understand your handoff without a walkthrough call? The honest answer to this question is very revealing.

What do you need from us at intake to avoid revision loops? A provider with a real process has a clear answer. One without one will say “just send us the files.”

Questions like “Do you sign an NDA?” and “What’s your turnaround time?” are worth confirming, but they don’t tell you much about how the work actually gets done.

What to Review After the First Delivery

The first delivered project is an evaluation as much as it is a deliverable. These are the things worth reviewing specifically.

Communication clarity during the build. Were questions clear and batched, or scattered and late? Was the provider easy to reach, or was there a day where communication went quiet?

Browser and device behavior. Run it through your testing matrix before considering it done. If it breaks somewhere, note when and how you found out – before or after delivery.

Revision behavior. If you requested a revision, how was it handled? Was the response calm and clear, or did it introduce new scope questions? Was the turnaround reasonable?

File legibility. Open the code as if you’ve never seen it. Is it navigable? Would another developer be able to work with it without asking the original developer for context?

A provider who scores well across all of these on the first project is worth continuing with. A provider who scores well on most but has a clear gap – silent revisions, undocumented assumptions, Safari issues – is one where you now know what to address going forward. A provider with multiple gaps on the first delivery rarely improves significantly on the second.

Final Decision: Choose Process Over Presentation

Portfolios are easy to optimize. Every provider shows their strongest work. What a portfolio doesn’t show is how problems get handled, how unclear input becomes a build decision, or how a revision request is received at 4pm on a Friday. The providers who hold up over time are the ones with real process behind the presentation. They have a specific answer to the incomplete-Figma-file question. They track assumptions.
